Experiment Two: The Space Between

Week One Submission:

Architects: Carlo Scarpa and Toyo Ito

6 axonometric drawings exploring the amalgamation of 5 rectangular prisms, each reflecting a concept directed by the design style of each architect.

1. Toyo Ito: Transparency and light

1. Toyo Ito: Transparency and light

2. Toyo Ito: Irrationality/ Flexibility

3. Toyo Ito: Incorporation of natural light through structural pattern

4. Toyo Ito: Floating / weightlessness

1. Carlo Scarpa: Simple Geometry/ subtraction

2. Carlo Scarpa: Reflection

3. Carlo Scarpa: Controlled Chaos

The two concepts and sketches chosen to continue working with are:
Toyo Ito: Floating and Weightlessness
Carlo Scarpa: Controlled Chaos

These were then constructed in 3 dimensions using Google Sketchup, which were then exported into Cryengine, where a custom environment had been created.

Fraps was used to record an animation of the building in its environment. This video however cannot be uploaded directly to this blog - for the final submission i will have to upload it to youtube - then provide the link on this blog.
For the mean time, i have uploaded Screenshots directly from Fraps

I do not like how they interact with the environment i have made - they look very much just 'plonked' there, before submitting my week 2 task i will ensure the building looks connected with its environment. These buildings do not have any correlation with their architects either, which clearly needs to be incorporated as well.

  1. I agree with you Sasha, also make sure that you are aware of the scale of your building. At this point, it is also important to design your building and your environment at the same time so that they develop together. Good luck.
